The market

Two separate businesses share one search term

Everything ranking for “bird spikes” falls into one of two groups.

The volume tier is imported stainless-on-plastic strips sold in multi-packs at $9 to $37, moving thousands of units a month on thousands of reviews. OFFO, PANGCH, CIIC, BORHOOD and PestFlee own this tier outright, and between them they take the large majority of category revenue.

The trade tier is the legacy American brands: Bird-X, Bird B Gone and Bird Barrier. These sell in linear-foot lengths, target contractors and building owners, and carry real specifications. The entire trade tier on Amazon is worth roughly $60,000 a month. We are currently priced out of this tier, but there is real opportunity to grab market share in this segment.

The important read is that the trade tier is not dead. Bird-X alone pulls about $37,000 a month from spikes, and it does that at prices well below ours but well above the imports. There is a defensible middle. We are simply not in it.

Bird-X EWS 8 in100 ft$219.00$2.19-49%
Bird B Gone 8 in50 ft$191.50$3.83-10%

Bird-X EWS is the primary like-for-like on this width and undercuts us by roughly half at every length. Bird B Gone sits between the two of us at $3.83 to $3.96 per foot, and the 100 ft row is the closest we come to anyone: 10% apart. Bird B Gone moves 26 units a month at that price against several hundred for Bird-X, so the width will bear a premium, just not much volume at one.

EnviroSpike is the sharpest comparison in the whole analysis: 5 in wide, stainless pins on a flexible UV-stabilized polycarbonate base, pre-assembled, glued or screwed or tied down, sold in a 10 to 100 ft ladder. Same width as our Wide, made the same way, and priced below Bird-X. Our own Dura-Spike is the one row where we are within touching distance of a competitor, and it sold 2 units last month.

Nothing in the trade tier is made narrower than 3 in, so there is no exact match for the Narrow. Bird B Gone’s 3 in at $3.37 per foot is the closest on width and Bird-X’s 6 in is the closest on price. The 100 ft row is the only place in the entire range where a Bird-Flite variation is cheaper per foot than a trade competitor.

Pros and cons against Bird-Flite

PANGCH Volume tier B0CRP75VM5

7,901 units$363,661/mo$2.19/ft
Where they beat us
  • Lowest entry price in the category at $8.99, which makes trial almost free
  • Number one clicked product on the “bird spikes” search term
  • 3,860 reviews at 4.3, so the social proof question is settled before the shopper reads anything
  • FBA with Prime delivery against our seven-day ship estimate
Where we beat them
  • Thin stamped base, no adhesive supplied, and buyers report assembly work
  • 4.1 ft per pack means a real parapet run needs six or seven packs and six or seven joins
  • No width above roughly 5 in, so wide ledges and beams are simply not addressable
  • No brand, no technical support, no spec sheet a pest control company can hand a client

OFFO Volume tier B08BPCYLH3

6,786 units$122,020/mo$2.06/ft
Where they beat us
  • Amazon’s Choice badge on the head term, plus 11,074 reviews at 4.4
  • Stainless base rather than plastic, which reads as premium at $20.99
  • Deep variation ladder across colors, widths and pre-assembled options
  • Runs the sponsored brand banner above organic results on our own search term
Where we beat them
  • Metal base is visible against light stone, where our clear polycarbonate disappears
  • 10.2 ft packs, so the same joining problem at contractor scale
  • No glue in the box, and the adhesive is where most DIY installs go wrong
  • Pin density and spacing are not published, so there is no spec to specify against

Bird-X Trade tier B000ABBJIG

~580 units$37,291/mo$1.99–$2.88/ft
Where they beat us
  • The direct analog to Bird-Flite and roughly half our price at every length
  • Sells the full ladder from 10 ft to 100 ft. The 8 in, 100 ft pack is $219 against our $427.93, and the 6 in equivalent alone does $14,650 a month
  • FBA on every size, so contractors get it in two days
  • 290 to 3,765 reviews depending on width, against our 8
Where we beat them
  • Listings are run by resellers, not the brand. The 8 in ASIN has ten offers and is sold by Quality Problem Solvers, which means no brand control over price, content or A+ pages
  • Material listed as aluminium in the spec block while the copy claims stainless, a credibility gap a pro buyer will notice
  • 2 ft strips against our 1 ft snap-apart sections, so more waste on short runs
  • No adhesive included, and reviews single out cost per foot on large jobs as the complaint

Bird B Gone Trade tier B0753J938P

403 units$16,116/mo$1.80–$5.26/ft
Where they beat us
  • Genuine brand presence with a storefront, sponsored placements and a coherent range
  • EnviroSpike is the closest product to Bird-Flite anywhere on the marketplace: same 5 in width, stainless on UV-stabilized polycarbonate, and it reaches $1.80 per foot at 100 ft against our $3.29
  • Proves premium is possible on width: their BBG2001 8 in runs $3.83 to $3.96 per foot, well clear of Bird-X
  • Appears in the bundle widget directly on our own detail page
Where we beat them
  • Their volume SKU is UV-stabilized plastic spikes, not stainless, so on materials we win outright
  • EnviroSpike stainless holds only 64 reviews and sells 29 units a month across every length, with no featured offer on the 10 ft and an Amazon high-price flag against it
  • Their whole spike line does $16,116 a month, which is a target we could realistically take share from
  • Mixed fulfillment and patchy stock across the range

Bird Barrier Bird-Flite Us B08NMM4TRB

2 units$170/mo$3.18–$7.25/ft
Real strengths
  • Best specification on the page: 302 stainless, 36 pins per foot on Xtra Wide, clear polycarbonate base
  • Bird Barrier Bond adhesive included, which no competitor supplies
  • 1 ft sections that snap smaller and bend or kink, the flexibility installers actually pay for
  • Twelve live variations, three widths from 2.5 in to 8 in and four lengths from 5 ft to 100 ft, all in stock, and a brand with a 1993 heritage and B2B credibility
  • Listing Health Score 8.1, so the content itself is sound
What is holding it back
  • Priced at roughly double the only comparable product on the page, and the ladder inverts at 10 ft and 25 ft where Narrow costs more than Wide
  • FBM only, one offer, no Prime badge, delivery quoted four days out
  • 8 reviews at 4.1, and the one visible review is a soft three-star

Recommendation · proposed pricing

The optimal pricing model

Everything in this section is proposed, not live

Price against Bird-X, not against the imports. We cannot and should not chase $1.28 a foot, but a 100% premium over the only comparable trade product is not a premium, it is an exit from the market.

A 20 to 30% premium over the trade benchmarks is defensible on the merits. Those benchmarks are Bird-X EWS on the 8 in and Bird B Gone EnviroSpike on the 5 in, and the target ladder clears both: Wide 25 ft at $3.00 sits 31% over EnviroSpike, Wide 100 ft at $2.29 sits 27% over it. We supply the adhesive, we have higher pin density, we have a clear base that disappears on stone, and we have the brand a pest control company can put in front of a client. That premium translates to roughly $2.80 to $3.60 per foot on Xtra Wide depending on length, and $2.10 to $2.80 on Narrow.

Proposed price for the hero SKU Xtra Wide 8 in, 25 ft at $89.95

Down from $137.03. That is $3.60 per foot, a third more than Bird-X’s 24 ft pack, and the first price at which a contractor comparing the two listings has a reason to read our bullets instead of closing the tab.

Merchant net is the proposed price less Amazon’s flat 15% referral fee, which is the only Amazon fee on a merchant-fulfilled offer. It does not include what it costs us to pick, pack and ship the order ourselves. FBA net is the proposed price less referral, fulfillment and monthly storage, with the outbound freight absorbed by Amazon. The gap between the two columns is not margin lost by moving to FBA, it is the price of our own shipping.

* FBA cannot be costed for the three 100 ft variations. Amazon holds no package dimensions or weight against those ASINs, so the Revenue Calculator returns no fulfillment fee. Merchant figures are shown for them until carton dimensions are registered, which is on the action list.

The ladder is set so that at every length Narrow costs less than Wide, and Wide less than Xtra Wide. The 5 ft packs keep a deliberate per-foot premium: small quantities are a homeowner buy where convenience beats unit economics, and holding them high protects the ladder so the 25 ft reads as the value choice. Bird B Gone’s 8 in line at $3.83 to $3.96 per foot is the one argument for holding Xtra Wide higher than proposed; if landed cost is tight, Xtra Wide 100 ft at $3.00 to $3.20 rather than $2.79 is defensible on that evidence.

After Amazon fees

What FBA actually costs at the proposed prices

The fulfillment fee is not an extra cost on top of what we spend today. It replaces our own pick, pack and outbound freight. The question is not whether $8.25 is a lot, it is whether $8.25 is more or less than what it costs us to put a 25 ft box on a carrier ourselves.

Fees below are pulled from Amazon’s own Revenue Calculator against each live ASIN, run at the proposed prices from the ladder above rather than current prices. They are standard-season rates and include the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge that has applied since 17 April 2026. The October to January holiday peak rates are excluded.

Storage is the monthly per-unit charge at one unit held and one sold per month, January to September rates. Inbound placement is not in the table and adds roughly $3 per unit, $3.12 on the hero SKU, which can be avoided by sending five or more identical cartons per item under Amazon-optimized shipment splits. Gross after fees is before landed cost.

* The three 100 ft rows are merchant-fulfilled figures, carrying the 15% referral fee only. Amazon holds no package dimensions for those ASINs so no FBA fulfillment fee can be quoted, and the merchant figure is the only one that can be stated honestly today. Their gross looks strong for the same reason, so read those three rows as incomplete rather than best in class: our own outbound freight still has to come out of them.

The Xtra Wide carton is costing us $6.25 a unit

Narrow and Wide ship in a 13.5 x 7.8 x 7.7 in carton and price as Large standard at $8.25. Xtra Wide ships in a 13 x 12 x 11 in carton, and that 11 in shortest side pushes it past the 8 in Large standard limit into Large bulky at $14.50. It is billed on a dimensional weight of 12.35 lb for a product that actually weighs 5.35 lb.

Getting the shortest side under 8 in and the longest under 18 in moves the whole Xtra Wide line back to Large standard. On the 25 ft that is worth about $6.25 a unit. It matters more on the short lengths, because the 5 ft and 10 ft Xtra Wide ship in the same oversized box and pay the same $14.50 to move a 1.3 lb product.

The three 100 ft SKUs cannot go FBA at all yet

All three 100 ft variations carry no package dimensions or weight in the Amazon catalog. The Revenue Calculator reads them as 0 x 0 x 0 at 0 lb and returns a placeholder fee rather than a real quote. Until real carton dimensions are registered, these cannot be sent to FBA and cannot be costed.

That is worth fixing first rather than last. The 100 ft SKUs are the contractor buy, they carry the best fee ratio of anything in the range because the fee is close to flat while the price is not, and they are the SKUs Bird-X is beating us on hardest at $219.

ASIN by ASIN, the fixed fee inputs

Referral scales with whatever price we set, but fulfillment and storage are driven by the carton, not the price, so they hold steady across the ladder. These are the figures behind every calculation above.

Dimensional weight is length x width x height divided by 139. Amazon bills on the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight, which is why every Xtra Wide pays on 12.35 lb regardless of what it actually weighs. Large standard tops out at 18 x 14 x 8 in; anything past that is Large bulky.

Reading the table. Per ft is the sell price divided by the pack length, with the nearest trade-tier equivalent underneath it in grey so you can see the competitive consequence of each price as you type. The Narrow and Wide rows compare against Bird B Gone EnviroSpike, which matches our 5 in on width and construction; the Xtra Wide rows compare against Bird-X EWS 8 in. Fees % turns red above 45%, which is roughly the point where a SKU stops working on FBA. Fulfillment is editable: type over it to model a different carton, and the field turns amber to show it is no longer Amazon’s quoted figure.

Which SKUs suit FBA and which do not

Fees as a share of price is the whole story. On the 25 ft packs it lands between 26% and 32%, which is normal for the category and leaves a workable gross. On the 5 ft packs it runs from 48% to 65%, because a $30 product pays the same $8 to $14.50 to move as a $137 one.

The sensible split is to send the 25 ft and, once dimensions exist, the 100 ft packs to FBA, where the Prime badge is worth most and the fee ratio is defensible, and to leave the 5 ft packs merchant-fulfilled or fold them into a bundle. Xtra Wide 5 ft in particular gives up 65% of a $29.95 sale before landed cost, which is not a business at any volume.
