Choosing the correct spike solution

Bird deterrent spikes like Bird Barrier’s  Bird-Flite and Dura-Spike are highly effective ledge deterrents. They have been installed on thousands of buildings with  great success.  Selecting a spike solution requires careful understanding of the bird problem, bird pressure and species observed. Experience has shown that different bird control solutions work for different situations.

Never use a spike solution when the pressure is heavy, like an overnight roosting spot.  Typically these sites are ledges with an overhead cover of some sort (eave, roofline, etc.) The birds here will “fight” for their overnight spot and often move the spike with their bodies and or place nesting materials directly on top of the spike.

Spike is also not the most effective solution for birds larger than pigeons. As seen in the picture, larger birds can easily bend spike almost flat, even in daytime perch situations.

Bird Flite bird spikes are effective against pigeons and gulls. It is effective on ledges, parapets, window seals, signs, chimneys, roof peaks, lights etc. Bird-Flite is installed on thousands of U.S. buildings with an incredible success rate. Its stainless steel rods and U.V.-resistant polycarbonate base are very durable.

StealthNet and OvoControl: A One-Two Punch

In this video, see both the StealthNet and OvoControl applications. And hear what a happy cow sounds like celebrating his new bird-free home. And learn how the pest professional was able to attract the pigeons to the new food source.

A large steel farm building that houses a university’s agricultural animals had a serious problem. Though there is a roof, two of the sides are wide open, and the roof’s open beam structure provided thousands of feet of perching surfaces for pigeons.

StealthNet to the Rescue
Bird Barrier’s StealthNet was installed tightly under all the roosting points, and down the walls as well. Pigeons could still fly in, but were denied the opportunity to perch and contaminate the animal’s feed below.

OvoControl Program Added
To knock down the pigeon population humanely, an OvoControl feeder was installed near the barn. OvoControl is birth control for pigeons, and sites that utilize the product generally experience a 50% decrease in pigeons in the first year.

Arrested for feeding the birds!?

In Henderson, Nevada, the city has been struggling silently with their pigeon problem for years. Now, in hopes to get rid of the 750,000 to a million pigeons found in just one county, they are enforcing a law that will stop people from creating attractive environments for the pigeons. For example, feeding the birds or leaving food out for the birds.

The city is doing this in hope to cut back the number of birds as both the health risk and property damage could be great.

Those who do not adhere to this new law can find themselves with a warning or a $1000 fine to 6 months in jail.

The Flying Rat

It’s safe to say that humans and wild pigeons are not the best of friends. While there is a certain breed of pigeon bred for racing, and domesticated by humans, the pigeons perched on the side of your house, or walking along your balcony, are not that kind.

One unique thing about pigeons is that they are not afraid of humans. These birds thrive in human habitats. They can eat a wide array of food types, including human food which is why they have become so accustomed to human environments.

Since they enjoy human habitats so much, pigeons can pose a nuisance to both residential and business owners. Pigeons are known to transmit diseases and their droppings contain several threatening agents, including bacteria, fungi and even parasites. These agents can cause sicknesses similar to the flu, and potentially even worse!

Not only do these birds pose a health risk, but they are an immediate threat to your property. Their  droppings can build up a lot quicker than you would expect causing backed up drains or gutters. The uric acid found in their feces is also highly corrosive causing damage to buildings. They can erode wood, damage steel, destroy air conditioning units.  On top of that, they can present a situation in which humans may slip and fall.

The most effective method for deterring pigeons from your property is the 2″ StealthNet . StealthNet is a permenant solution as it is meant to completely seclude the area .

Another option is the Bird-Shock Flex-Track . This track emits a small, painless electrical shock to birds. It is a humane way of modifying the behavior of pigeons roosting on your property by conditioning them to not come back. It also has a sleek design that won’t take away from the aesthetics of your property.

Bird Spikes are another popular option as long as the birds aren’t nesting. The spike literally disables the birds from landing on the protected area. However, the spikes are dull enough that they cannot harm the birds.
